Ratto Bros. serves up a fresh, tasty salad at the State Fair

On Friday, July 25th, fairgoers at the 2014 California State Fair got an unexpectedly delightful and healthful treat. The Fair has traditionally been synonymous for the likes of corn dogs and deep-fried Twinkies. But this year, Modesto-based Save Mart Supermarkets sponsored the California’s Kitchen “In The Raw” Taste Center, featuring locally-grown fresh produce and meat recipes. Friday it was Ratto Bros.' turn to treat the crowd. They teamed up with renowned local chef, John Surla of Surla’s Restaurant in Modesto. John created a very tasty Kale & Mint Salad, using kale and mint grown at the Ratto Bros. Modesto farm. Frank Ratto, his daughter Katherine Ratto, and John had their hands full meeting the demand of the hungry and appreciative crowd. Over 1,500 fairgoers enjoyed a serving and the response was overwhelmingly positive. Who knows? Maybe Surla’s Kale & Mint Salad will replace the deep-fried Twinkie as the new California State “Fare”!
